pwd_controlaula(8) create a file with a VNC encrypted password

SYNOPSIS

pwd_controlaula passwd-file passwd

DESCRIPTION

pwd_controlaula allows you to set the password used to access VNC desktops. It stores an obfuscated version of the given passwd in the given passwd-file file. So, a vnc server will be able to start with the -passwd command using the given password.

This small application is based on the vncpasswd from the vnc4-common Debian package.

The password must be at least six characters long, and only the first eight characters are significant. Note that the stored password is not encrypted securely - anyone who has access to this file can trivially find out the plaintext password. However, when accessing a VNC desktop a challenge-response mechanism is used over the wire making it hard for anyone to crack the password simply by snooping on the network.

OPTIONS

This program has these mandatory arguments:

passwd-file file where the encrypted password for vncserver use.
passwd plain text password to be encrypted.
